Different Types of Strollers

Umbrella Strollers

Umbrella strollers are strollers that are lightweight, portable and are easy to carry when it is folded like an umbrella. Umbrella strollers are not only suitable for travelling, but are also suitable for everyday use in an urban setting given that they are easy to maneuver around crowds. Because of their versatility, I really consider umbrella strollers as an “essential” item for all parents. In terms of price, umbrella strollers are typically lower priced when compared to full-featured strollers.

An example of an umbrella stroller is the UPPAbaby 2015 G-Luxe stroller. You can find out more about which strollers are the best umbrella strollers, or check out one of my favorites here.

Lightweight Strollers

Lightweight strollers are a lot like umbrella strollers, however, they are designed with portability and ease of transport in mind. More specifically, lightweight strollers are strollers that weigh less than 20 pounds and some even weigh less than 15 pounds! When talking about lightweight strollers, every pound counts! Because of their relatively small footprint and dimensions, they are often not equipped with extensive amounts of storage space when compared to full-sized strollers. In addition, lightweight strollers typically have a lower maximum weight capacity when compared to umbrella strollers.

Lightweight strollers are ideal for families who are always out and about and therefore don’t want to constantly deal with a heavy or bulky stroller. Lightweight strollers are also great in terms of travelling.

The Inglesina Net is an example of a lightweight stroller. To learn more, head on over to the best lightweight stroller page.

Jogging Strollers

For those of you who consider yourself a jogger or an active person who likes to go on hikes, a jogger stroller is a great option. As its name implies, jogger strollers are designed to be used in jogs or runs. These strollers are often equipped with a wheel suspension system to absorb the shocks and bumps during a jog. These strollers are also equipped with pneumatic tires. Such features allow you to jog on uneven surfaces, while still providing comfort to your child in the stroller. Some jogging strollers also come with a hand brake which assists in slowing down the stroller.

An example of a jogging stroller is the BOB Revolution Flex. If you’re interested, you should read more about the best jogging strollers.

Double Strollers

Double strollers are strollers that are suitable for use with two children. This type of stroller is suitable for parents who are either expecting twins or have a toddler and an infant. Double strollers make it so much more convenient to get out of the house with both your children and is definitely the more sensible option compared to having two single strollers. Double strollers can come in a side by side configuration or in a tandem (front-back) configuration.

The Baby Jogger City Select is an example of an extremely versatile double stroller. Read more about the best double strollers.

Double Jogging Strollers

Double jogging strollers are a combination of jogging and double strollers. These strollers are ideal for parents with two children and are avid joggers. Like the jogging stroller, double jogging strollers come with features such as a suspension system and pneumatic tires which will allow you to jog on uneven terrain. The price of double jogging strollers vary depending on the brand as well as the features the stroller comes with.

An excellent example of a double jogging stroller is the BOB Revolution Flex Duallie stroller. Find out more about the best double jogging strollers.

How Do You Pick Out A Stroller For You and Your Family?

As a start, you should now know the differences and similarities between the different strollers out there. However, even within each type of stroller, there are so many different options to choose from! Below are a few questions and factors you’ll want to consider when choosing a stroller.

What will this stroller be used for? Will it be an everyday use stroller, a stroller you use to travel around or a jogging stroller?

This is probably the most important question you’ll have to ask yourself. Determining how you plan to use the stroller dictates what type of stroller you should be purchasing. For example if you’re planning to jog with the stroller, you’ll be needing a jogging stroller and NOT any other type of stroller. Non-jogging strollers are not only unsuitable for jogging activities, but are also more prone to accidents if you jog with them. Likewise, if you’re looking for a really portable and lightweight stroller, you wouldn’t want to be looking into jogging strollers.

Note however that jogging strollers can be a great option for everyday use if you’ll be walking on uneven surfaces.

How many children do you have or plan to have?

If you’re looking for a stroller that can accommodate two children, then you’ll need a double stroller. If you are planning to have another baby soon after your first child, double strollers will also be a good economical option. You’ll also want to note the weight capacity for each stroller seat in a double stroller to ensure both your children will fit in the double stroller. For parents who are avid joggers and have two children, the double jogging stroller will be the best option for you.

Besides double strollers, there are also strollers designed to fit triplets!

What is your budget for a stroller?

The price for strollers can vary significantly depending on the brand and features the stroller offers. Brands such as BOB and Baby Jogger are premium quality strollers which not only come equipped with nice to have and convenient features, but will also last you a long time. From my experience, the quality and convenience you’ll experience with more expensive strollers justify their higher price tags. Nevertheless, you’ll need to figure out what is the maximum you can spend on a stroller so that you can eliminate those that are out of the price range you set.

How important is having a lightweight and portable stroller to you?

One of the main specifications that is important to look into when choosing a stroller is its weight. If you’re going to be out and about most of the time, or if you’re planning on frequently travelling with the stroller, you’ll definitely want a lightweight and compact stroller. Note that strollers that have tons of features generally correlates to being heavier. For travelling, I’d limit my search to umbrella strollers and lightweight strollers. One of my favorite lightweight and portable stroller is the Mountain Buggy Nano stroller.

One thing that should be pointed out is that even if you only have one child, there’s nothing wrong if you want to purchase two stroller for different purposes. For example, you could purchase a jogging stroller for everyday use and jogging, and a lightweight/umbrella stroller for running errands and when you’re travelling.

Mommy Stroller’s Favorite Best-Selling Strollers

I and many other moms have tried out a good amount of strollers and have finally settled on the Mommy Stroller’s favorite best-selling strollers. This list is not based on the stroller type, but rather what were the overall favorites.

Baby Jogger City Select Stroller

When I think about the best stroller, the first thing that comes to mind is the Baby Jogger City Select stroller – it one of the most, if not the most versatile stroller around. Versatile in the sense that it is car seat compatible and bassinet compatible, but also versatile in the sense that it can accommodate up to 3 kids. The base model comes with a single seat – you can then buy a second seat and a glider board for your older child to ride on. Because of its versatility, the Baby Jogger City Select will likely be the only everyday use stroller you end up buying given that it’ll last for many years to come. In fact, it has all (or most) of the bells and whistles you could think of in a stroller – easily foldable, large sun canopy with peekaboo window, multiple seat recline positions, adjustable handle bar and a large storage basket.

Inglesina Net Stroller

The Inglesina Net stroller is not only lightweight (weighs just 11.2 lbs!), but also has a sturdy build as it has an aluminum frame. This stroller comes with a large UPF 50+ rated canopy, a 5 point harness, a removable cup holder and perhaps the most exciting feature, removable and machine-washable seats. What this means is that it is no longer a hassle to deal with spills and stains, which when it comes to kids, is inevitable! This Inglesina stroller has a lot of great features related to its seat. Not only is it well-padded for extra comfort, it also has a pretty unique design, whereby the “base” of the seat is made of meshed material for better air circulation on hot summer days. On such days, you can just pop out the removable seat pad for better ventilation and comfort for your little one in the stroller.

Baby Jogger Summit X3 Double Stroller

The Baby Jogger Summit X3 Double stroller is not only extremely well-designed for comfort, but also includes many nice to have features, making it super convenient to use and carry around. One of its key features is its patented quick fold technology which folds the stroller in one step. I have to admit that this is certainly one of the easiest folding mechanisms for a double jogging stroller. Other unique features this stroller showcases include a remote lock for the front swivel wheel, a hand brake, an all-wheel suspension system and its excellent canopy coverage for maximum sun protection. This stroller has an almost perfect rating among parent joggers.

Maclaren Quest Stroller

The Maclaren Quest stroller is definitely a high quality, premium umbrella stroller that weighs only 14.2 pounds. It has four different seat reclining positions and an extendable leg rest to ensure your child’s comfort. What’s really nice about this stroller is that it has a removable, machine washable seat, making it super easy to clean and care for this stroller. What this means is that you don’t have to worry too much about any spills with this stroller.  Aside from that, the canopy that comes with this stroller will not only protect your child from sunlight, but also rain. The canopy is not only waterproof, but the purchase of this stroller also includes a rain cover which is usually an accessory for other strollers. This Maclaren Quest stroller also has an additional safety feature which Maclaren calls the “Newborn Safety System.” This unique safety feature includes a protective head and foot barrier that safely cocoons newborn babies!

Mountain Buggy Nano Stroller

I hold a very high regard for the Mountain Buggy Nano stroller. Not only is it ultra-lightweight, but more importantly, it is an umbrella stroller that makes travelling super convenient. The stand out feature for me for this stroller is that it fits in an included satchel which has a shoulder strap for easy carrying. In my experience, having a satchel to house the stroller prevents the stroller from being scratched up or damaged while it is in the airplane. Having the stroller fit in a satchel is also super convenient for transport and travel. Once folded, this stroller measures only 22” x 12” x 22” (2015 model). The folding and unfolding mechanism for this stroller is also extremely easy and requires only one hand!

It also appears that I’m not the only one who adores the Mountain Buggy Nano stroller; this 44 pound capacity stroller is the winner of the Red Dot Design Award in 2015 for its awesome and innovative stroller design! Just watch the video below to see how great this stroller is for travel.

BOB Revolution Flex Duallie Stroller

The BOB Revolution Flex Duallie stroller is a versatile stroller that can be used for jogging as well as for everyday use. Like the BOB Ironman Duallie, this double jogging stroller has a very durable frame that is constructed with high strength chromoly and aluminum. This stroller also has premium quality wheels, a padded handle bar that is adjustable and a good amount of storage space. I really liked the adjustable handle bar and the small footprint of this double jogging stroller when folded. This is one of the most versatile double jogging strollers around in the market today.

Summer Infant 3D Zyre Convenience Stroller

This stroller is not only super lightweight, weighing only 13 pounds, but also offers an excellent oversized canopy. As you’ll find in my detailed review of the Summer Infant 3D Zyre, this stroller has one of the BEST sun protection coverage I’ve seen in any umbrella stroller. If you’re living in an area with tons of hot sunny days, this stroller will provide excellent sun protection for your child. Another nice thing about this stroller is that it is super easy to set up! All you need to do is snap the 4 set of wheels to the stroller frame and that’s it! Other key features of this stroller include its double wheel system for a smoother ride, an adjustable 5-point harness, and a one hand folding mechanism.
