If you are a new mom in New York City, then you are probably starting to realize that strollers are not only a convenience, they are a MUST. In fact, your stroller needs to be able to do a number of things and do them well in order for it to be useful. In a busy city that’s filled with apartment buildings and subways, your daily commute is sure to involve narrow halls, busy roads and stairs, complete with occasional potholes and curbs. Therefore, the best strollers for NYC will have to be able to handle that and more.

When it comes to stroller rental, NYC is not lacking in options, but we would advise renting one only if you are there for a brief period of time. If you live in NYC, or if your visit is set to extend beyond a few weeks, we recommend you skip the renting process altogether and go straight to buying one from our list of best strollers for NYC.
How Do You Find a Stroller Suited for NYC?
It will of course depend on your specific necessities like the age of your child, your daily routes and how much you must travel/commute with a stroller. With so many stairs around the city, the most important aspect of a NYC stroller is its weight. Choose a light stroller, especially if you plan to use it daily. The big sturdy ones will come in handy for family outings during a holiday, but when it comes to daily usage, you just can’t beat a lightweight stroller for everyday use in NYC.
Find something that’s easy to fold because you don’t want it to be a struggle each time you have to fold it in or out, particularly if you get around using the subway. As you may already know, there are umbrella strollers, double strollers, sit and stand strollers, newborn strollers; you name it, and most stroller stores in NYC will have it.
It is imperative that you don’t get confused while choosing the right stroller for your family so that you don’t waste any time or money in purchasing the wrong stroller.
If your family has two children who have more than two and a half years in between them, we suggest that you buy a sit and stand stroller. It will allow the older child more freedom and you won’t have to constantly worry about keeping track of him/her in the busy city that New York is.
Double strollers are perfect for parents that have young children who are close to each other in age. The siblings can travel without feeling lonely, thanks to each other’s company. These are usually relatively heavy (although there are some lightweight double umbrella strollers around nowadays) and can take a bit of an extra effort to stroll through the city streets, so keep that in mind.
Single strollers are the easiest to push and best for overall portability. If you have an infant, we recommend that you buy something that’s not only newborn friendly, but can also last your family for a few years down the road.
Now that you know what to look for, here are a few suggestions that I’d recommend for use in New York City.
Best Overall Stroller for NYC
Baby Jogger Mini GT
While some parents do prefer a more lightweight and portable stroller for use in the Big Apple, some do like something a little more sturdy, even if it weighs more. With a sturdier stroller, you’ll never have to continuously worry about avoiding pot holes and uneven terrain because such a stroller will be able to handle them obstacles pretty well. The Baby Jogger Mini GT is exactly that – an all-terrain stroller that offers front wheel suspension while still having a pretty compact form. It weighs 22.5 lbs, has a weight capacity of 65 lbs and is even car seat compatible, making it one of the best travel systems out there. Given that it is a Baby Jogger stroller, its design also makes use of the Quick Fold Technology, making it super easy and quick to fold the stroller. If you have a newborn, and am looking for a stroller that can give you a sense of sturdiness, the Baby Jogger Mini GT is a great choice.
Best Umbrella Stroller for NYC
UPPAbaby G-Luxe Stroller
The UPPAbaby G-Luxe is an umbrella stroller that is extremely comfortable and weighs just 15lbs. The height of the removable canopy can be adjusted for taller kids to sit without straining their necks. There is also SPF 50+ protection against the sun. We like the easy to click on foot brake and the wheels on the G-Luxe are pretty sturdy as well. You will love the folding mechanism which has an easy to reach lever that folds the stroller without much effort at all.
Babyzen YOYO Stroller
The YOYO is a luxury stroller which is heavier than the first two entries on our list, but still weighs decently at 12.8lbs. It includes a carrying strap, a rain cover, a travel bag and a backseat that is reversible. The storage basket below the seat is pretty spacious, and large enough that you will appreciate that you have it. However, the official recommendation for maximum weight is only 33lbs unfortunately. The “soft drive system” makes locking front wheels unnecessary and the leg rest can be extended to make your child more comfortable.
What I particularly liked about the Babyzen YOYO stroller was its footprint once folded – it measures just 52 x 44 x 18 cm once folded!
Best Lightweight Stroller for NYC
What makes the Inglesina Net stroller a good choice for New York City is that it is compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry on subways, yet still offers a whole lot of great features at an affordable price tag. Aside from being just 11.2 lbs, the Inglesina Net has a “one foot, one hand” folding mechanism as well as a shoulder strap for even more portability. The stand out features for the Inglesina Net can be seen through the design of its seat – the seat pad is removable and machine washable! I also found the seat to be padded pretty well to ensure comfort. The stroller also has a 2 position recline on the seat.
Inglesina Trip Stroller
If you’re looking for something in between a lightweight stroller and an all-terrain stroller, the Inglesina Trip is a great choice. Despite the fact that it weighs just 14.5 lbs, the Inglesina Trip is equipped with shock-absorbing suspensions, giving it a good balance between being portable and sturdy. The Inglesina Trip has a 4 position reclining backrest and an adjustable leg rest to ensure the comfort of your little one. Beside these features, I like the fact that it has a rain cover canopy and a convenient carry handle for portability – both of which will be extremely useful for NYC.
The MacLaren triumph weighs just 10.8lbs but can carry kids who weigh up to 55lbs without an issue. You will find the ultra-lightweight stroller to be nothing short of a blessing while climbing subway stairs in NYC. The canopy is particularly large, complete with UPF+50 protection, wind-resistant rain cover and waterproofing. We like the fact that individual parts like the handle covers and wheels are replaceable and the seats can also be removed and washed with ease.
Best Double Stroller for NYC

ZOE XL2 Xtra Lightweight Double Stroller
The XL2 Xtra Lightweight is an aptly named product which weighs in at only 16lbs, in spite of it being a double stroller. The 135-degree reclining seats can carry up to 50lbs on each of the seats and includes a parent cup holder, a child cup holder, a snack tray, and a cushioned front belly bar within the package. The large, extendable canopy provides full protection against the sun and the wheels seem robust. What’s even better is that all ZOE strollers include a lifetime warranty on the wheels!
There is also no lack of storage on the double stroller with a big pocket at the back of the canopy and a large storage basket at the bottom. The Zoe XL2 Xtra Lightweight was built to be used in the city so it is properly equipped to get you through subways, stairs and even public transportation.
Baby Trend Sit N Stand Double
We decided to include a sit and stand unit, just in case you have children who are more than two years apart. This one allows the smaller child to seat in front and the older child to ride at the back. The good thing about the Baby Trend is that it also has a seat for the older child to sit in if he/she feels like it. Alternately, you can fit in two infant car seats simultaneously. The package includes a parent tray and two cup holders as well. Also, you will find a rear foot brake and the customary 5-point safety harness. Both the seats can carry 40lbs each and the entire stroller weighs a hefty 32.5lbs. The weight is the only issue here, but it does provide parents with a sense of balance and stability while strolling over occasional potholes and curbs within the city.
NYC Stroller Rental Options
They have more or less anything that you might need for the baby during your visit to the city. This includes but is not limited to cribs, toddler beds, bottle warmers, baby monitors, baby toys, changing tables and of course, strollers. They offer their services in Manhattan, Queens and Nassau County in Long Island. Their prime choice of stroller is the Baby Jogger City Mini like most other rental companies.
They cover NYC, Jersey Shore, Connecticut and the Hamptons. In addition to strollers, they also have other baby care equipment on offer like infant car seats, rocking chairs, changing tables, toys cribs and such. Both single strollers and double strollers are included in the catalog on their website.
They are one of the biggest stroller rental companies in the US and they offer their services throughout the nation. In New York, they will deliver to Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Long Island and Queens. You will get every possible equipment from them that you might ever need to rent for your baby. In the strollers department, they have everything from all-terrain strollers to lightweight jogging strollers. You can also use their website to book online after looking at the extensive list of services that they offer.
As explained earlier, when it comes to stroller rental, NYC has plenty of options for a parent to choose from. However, it is best to buy one if you plan to stay in New York City for an extended period of time. This will in turn save money and eliminate the hassles of renting a pre-used stroller. If you have a single child, go for the lightest strollers available because they are the best strollers for NYC in my experience. However, if you are planning to buy a double stroller, a little bit of sturdiness might prove to be helpful while pushing through uneven terrain.
Sit and stands are a good idea as they do offer more freedom to the older child, but they are also inherently heavy due to their design. As such, choose one only if your children have a good few years in between them. One last piece of advice would be to keep in mind the accessories that you will need with the strollers – as it can rain quite a bit in NYC, I often find it useful to get a rain cover for my stroller. Note which ones are included and which ones you will need to buy separately as that stroller accessories can cost a premium. Lastly, have fun exploring NYC with
