How Much Does a Stroller Cost?

What you can buy for your child depends on your budget for the most part. You want quality products for your baby, but you can’t break the bank. One of the largest purchases for a baby is a stroller. While some lightweight umbrella strollers can cost as little $50, a larger multi-seat stroller with several features can easily run upwards of $500. Learn more about stroller prices in today’s market.

How the Cost is Determined

The amount of money you’ll spend on a stroller will depend on multiple factors. You’ll want to consider the following:

Generally speaking, a single lightweight stroller is going to be cheaper than a heavy, fully-featured, multi-seat stroller. Jogging and all-terrain strollers tend to be more expensive than strollers made for recreational walking. Features like rain covers, sun canopies, extra storage, cup holders, and snack trays will also bring the cost up.

In this article, we’ll be covering the general costs that are associated with many different stroller types:

Umbrella Strollers

Umbrella strollers are the lightest type of stroller you can buy. An umbrella stroller with a simple suspension system, lightweight fabrics, small storage basket, and small sun canopy usually costs somewhere between $40-80.

Some umbrella strollers feature a highly compact fold and carrying strap for easy traveling. These strollers often have more durable seating, extendable sun canopies, and extra storage. These strollers typically run between $100-200. While rare, there are some umbrella strollers that cost more than $200.

Lightweight Strollers

Lightweight strollers are similar to umbrella strollers in that they are made from lighter materials and usually fold up more compactly, making them the perfect companion for travelling. These strollers usually have a more durable suspension system and extendable sun canopies. They also usually come with a storage basket. Many have at least one cup holder. Lightweight strollers often run between $50-200. The more expensive strollers have either more features or are made from better, longer-lasting materials.

Jogging Strollers

Single jogging strollers come with a large range of features, so they also have a large range or pricing. Some jogging strollers look like typical walking strollers but simply have the addition of jogging wheels and a stronger suspension system. Other joggers have special, wide wheels made just for jogging. Higher end jogging strollers often come with hand brakes, adjustable handlebars, wind-resistant rain covers, cup holders, and extra storage. Depending on how many features your jogger has, you will likely spend anywhere between $150-400.

The extra seat and suspension support needed for a double jogger will up the cost. While double joggers often have the same variety of features as single jogging strollers, they tend to run much higher in price. Some of the least expensive double joggers start at around $175, but many typically run between $250-600.

Double Strollers

Like with jogging strollers, the added seat and support needed for a double stroller will up the price. There are different types of double strollers – most are either a double umbrella stroller or a double stroller made for regular walking and traveling. Because the umbrella strollers are lighter and usually have fewer features, they are less expensive. You can find decent double umbrella stroller between $70-150, while others that are more feature-packed can go north of $300. For regular walking strollers, the more durable frame and extra features will bring up the cost. Most of these have storage baskets and pockets, snack trays, extendable canopies, cup holders, and other conveniences. A double stroller of this variety will cost $150-400.

All-Terrain Strollers

All-terrain strollers are made to go on any surface indoors or outdoors. They usually have rubber wheels made for rugged trails, and hand brakes to help you keep in control of the stroller. They also usually come with a lot of storage so you can be out in remote areas for a long time. Because of the durable materials these are made out of, they tend to cost more than normal strollers. They can run between $150-400.

Travel System

A travel system or a car seat stroller combo is the combination of an infant car seat and stroller. The infant car seat attaches to the stroller, so you don’t have to take your baby out of the car seat to go into the stroller. As the baby grows and can sit in the stroller on their own, you can just use the stroller as a regular stroller without the car seat. Most car seat and stroller combination sets cost between $200-400. The cost tends to vary mostly based on brand and materials used.

Sit and Stand Stroller

A sit and stand stroller is a convenient option for parents who have a baby and a toddler. This stroller features a front seat with a five-point harness for a younger child and a bench in the back for an older child. The older child can either stand behind the front seat or sit on the bench.

Many sit and stand strollers also allow you to attach an infant car seat in the front or back. The cost will vary on how many extra features the stroller has and what materials it is made out of. Most cost between $100-$225.

Convertible Stroller

Convertible strollers allow you to grow your stroller with your family. They come as single strollers but allow you to add one or two more seats for additional children. You can then remove the seats for easy storage. Many have multiple seating combinations – parent facing, forward facing, etc. Most of these strollers allow you to attach an infant car seat or bassinet to them as well. There are not many convertible strollers on the market, and they also are complex to make because of the seating combinations. For these reasons, these tend to be some of the most expensive strollers on the market. Most will run between $400-700.

Conclusion

The amount of money you will spend on a stroller will likely be determined by what you plan to use it for. If you just need something for light walking and errands, you will be able to find a cheap stroller to meet your needs. If you need multiple seats or plan to use the stroller for hiking or jogging, you will need to spend more. Take your needs into consideration when you budget for your stroller.
